Stephen Harris is a veteran of the wine industry with over 20 years’ experience. If you want to know something about wine he is the man to ask!
Stephen was born into a wine industry family and began his retail experience as a 4 year old on the floor at his father’s famous wine store 60 Darling St Balmain. Adrian Harris went on to own and operate over a dozen of Sydney’s best bottle shops through the 80’s, 90’s, 00’s and today continues his legacy of “value for money” retailing with second to none service on the mid North Coast of NSW. Stephen enjoyed many a school holiday working alongside his father at the various outlets before entering the workforce in 1994 at Sydney’s famous Doyle’s Restaurant at Watsons Bay.
Along with Stephen’s publican grandfather and winery operating (Willow Creek Wines) uncle, Stephen’s mother, Beverley Harris, has been a pivotal role model and mentor. Leading by example with her own liquor store in Sydney’s famous beachside suburb Bondi. Now a local institution, Ben Buckler Cellars has been owned and operated for 25 years by this infamous matriarch of Bondi Beach.
Having worked in almost all facets of the industry Stephen is regarded as one of the industry’s most accomplished individuals. He has judged at the Sydney International Wine Competition (2007 & 2009) & was an associate at the 2005 Boutique Winemakers’ Exhibition, he was the beverage columnist for FPC Courier Group, writing contributor to Australian Bartender Magazine & Elizabeth Bay Cellars Magazine. Stephen enjoyed a highly rewarding role as sommelier at The Boathouse Restaurant (1996 – 1998). Until recently he was a partner at Bacchus Wine Merchants (2005 – 2016), a wine distribution company with an impressive portfolio of local and international wines. He was key accounts manager at Southcorp Wines and Owner/Operator of Hand Picked Wines. Previously the owner of the Wine Palace in Leichhardt & Dover Heights, in 2016 Stephen returned to the retail side of the game and has since opened multiple stores across Sydney’s East & Inner East. He has been a Len Evans tutorial scholar and completed the Wine Sensory Evaluation Course at the University of Adelaide.
Stephen’s passion for wine is apparent when in conversation with him at one of his stores, or as a participant in one of his wine appreciation courses or wine tours. A skilled tutor and effective communicator, Stephen is widely respected all over the world by the most prestigious winemakers.
